Today’s forecast.
Perhaps baseball picks are my calling. I’ve been rock solid all season long and I look to do it again tonight. Today, I like the Indians to beat the slumping and fading Tigers.
Cleveland reduced its magic number for clinching the division to five yesterday, as Travis Hafner homered and had three RBI to lift the Indians to a 7-4 win. Victor Martinez, Ryan Garko and Franklin Gutierrez also homered for the Indians, who moved 6 1/2 games in front of the Tigers in the Central. Cleveland is also just a half game back of the Boston Red Sox for the best overall record in the AL.
Things don get any easier for the Tigers today, as they will face AL Cy Young Award candidate C.C. Sabathia, who is 17-7 with a 3.21 ERA. Sabathia received a no-decision on Friday against Kansas City and surrendered four runs and seven hits in seven innings of a 5-4 win. Sabathia, who is vying to become the Tribes first Cy Young winner since Gaylord Perry in 1972, is 2-1 with a 6.04 ERA in four starts against Detroit this year. For his career he is 12-8 against the Tigers with a 4.38 ERA in 24 starts.
Detroit will pin its hopes on a left-hander of its own in Nate Robertson, who is 8-11 with a 4.93 ERA. Robertson picked up a win on Friday against the Minnesota Twins, as he allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. Robertson has faced the Indians 14 times in his career and is 2-4 against them with a 4.70 ERA.
Cleveland, which swept the Tigers in a three-game set from May 25-27, has won 11 of its 17 matchups with the Tigers this season after going 6-13 against them a year ago. The Indians have also won five of the eight matchups at Jacobs Field.
Take the better pitcher and team, Sabathia and the Indians.
Good luck with your action tonight!
